Advancing Your Career as a Woman in Academia

Delivered by: Professor Marcia Devlin

Professor Marcia Devlin AM is the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership, answerable to the Victorian Minister for Education.

Previously, Marcia was an academic for over 30 years, winning more than $6 million in funding, producing more than 320 publications and achieving a Google Scholar h-index of 37.

Marcia also held executive roles in the university sector, including Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Victoria University and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Federation University Australia, as well as senior leadership roles at RMIT, Deakin and the University of Melbourne.

A recognised thought leader across education sectors, Marcia serves on multiple education journal editorial boards and holds specialist and honorary appointments in Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Hong Kong. Marcia is a Trustee of the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre where she serves on the Nominations and Remuneration, and Policy Committees.

In 2021, Marcia released her book: Beating the Odds: A practical guide to navigating sexism in Australian universities.

In 2023, Marcia received an Order of Australia, for services to higher education and to women.
